Upland Bird Hunting Experience in Carey, Idaho
The Drift West Upland Bird Hunting Experience is not merely a hunting trip; it is an immersion into the untamed landscape of the Silver Peak Ranch itself. The ranch, spanning 400 acres near the town of Carey, Idaho, Craters of the Moon National Monument, and the legendary Silver Creek Preserve, serves as both the adventure base camp and the primary hunting ground. The property's diverse terrain, which includes a mix of shrub-steppe, grasslands, and rock outcroppings, is more than just a scenic backdrop; it is the natural, preferred habitat of the targeted species. After a good day's hunt, kick back and enjoy the quiet serenity of the Silver Peak Ranch accommodations.
The Drift West Upland Bird Experience
Our upland bird hunting experience is built around the rustic comfort and vast expanse of the Silver Peak Ranch in Carey. From the expansive ranch grounds our birds call home to the rustic comfort of the main lodge, cabins, and barn, Silver Peak offers the unique luxury of a private Idaho guest ranch stay.

Species: Chukar & Hungarian Partridge
A hunt at Silver Peak Ranch is a dynamic pursuit focused on two of Idaho's most sought-after upland game birds: the chukar and the Hungarian partridge. We offer hunts that focus on the pursuit of wild coveys, appealing to the more experienced hunter looking to test their skill. For those who prioritize more plentiful opportunity or for new hunters seeking an accessible entry point, the option to hunt planted birds is also available. This ensures a rewarding outcome while still providing a sporting challenge.

DIY vs Guided Hunts
The Guided Hunt package is the most comprehensive offering and is ideal for hunters who value professional support. Our guides possess extensive knowledge of the terrain and bird behavior, navigating the most productive areas of the property. Conversely, the DIY Hunt package appeals to the independent, experienced hunter who prefers the autonomy and challenge of navigating the grounds without a guide. This option allows the seasoned wingshooter to test their own skills and dogs on the ranch's 400 acres. This flexibility ensures that every hunter, regardless of their preferred style, can find a package that is perfectly suited to their needs.

The Base Camp: Rustic Comfort at Silver Peak Ranch
The Silver Peak Ranch is more than just a place to sleep; it is a fundamental part of the Drift West adventure, designed to be a sanctuary of comfort and camaraderie after a demanding day in the field. With 10 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms set across two cabins, a main lodge, and a working barn, the ranch combines modern and essential amenities with the rustic charm of a western guest ranch. Beyond the expansive ranch property, Silver Creek Preserve and Craters of the Moon are a short drive away - you just can't find better access than this!

Seasonal Availability & Trip Structure
Upland bird trips are offered from September through December, aligning with the statewide seasons for the primary target species, and are designed as a comprehensive, 3-day, 2-night experience. The structure of the trip is built to maximize hunting opportunities while providing ample time for relaxation and camaraderie at the base camp. A typical day on the ranch begins with a hearty breakfast, followed by a morning hunt. A midday break provides an opportunity to rest and refuel before an afternoon hunt. The day concludes with a return to the lodge, where guests can unwind, share stories of the day's hunt, and enjoy a well-earned dinner.

Upland Bird Experience FAQ's
What is the difference between a Guided and a DIY Hunt?
The Guided Hunt package includes expert guides and trained dogs to assist you in the field. The DIY Hunt is for experienced hunters who want to explore the ranch's "prescribed beats" on their own. Both options include room and board at the ranch.
What kind of terrain will we be hunting on?
Silver Peak Ranch spans 400 acres with diverse terrain, including shrub-steppe, grasslands, and lava outcroppings. This is ideal habitat for chukar, which prefer steep, grassy terrain with rock outcroppings, and Hungarian partridge, which favor grasslands and weedy areas.
What should I bring on the trip?
A valid Idaho hunting license is required for all participants. Due to the rugged terrain, a good pair of waterproof hiking boots with strong grip is highly recommended. It is also advised to bring plenty of water, as well as sunscreen and sunglasses for sunny winter days.

I've been on a few guided bird hunts, but this was by far my best experience yet! The Silver Peak Ranch was one of the coolest locations, and the bird hunting action was first class. Hard to beat!
