The fastest growing part of America has undergone fundamental change over the last 10 years. Southwest Florida has endured an avalanche of emigration, historical hurricanes, and red tide. Yet the fundamental legacy of the region remains rooted in the shallow waters which have brought the same disasters. This is an investigation of that legacy. Fly fishing remains the challenge of connection. The difficulty of roping salt water fish proves the mettle of the watermen… but it is the bounty and seclusion that has kept people here since the Calusa. That’s why we’ll camp, crab, net and pole through this piece. Staying on a mother ship with a skiff and two paddle boards, we’ll chase the megalithic migrating tarpon while cracking crabs over the open fire. We’ll cast a net for bait while diving beneath looking for game. And the future of that legacy? Maybe we’ll find some guesses.
Lacey Kelley the extraordinary salty guide and fourth generation Lee County stud. The conversations with her dad alone will be an extraordinary insight to the piece. And her career will dovetail nicely into the current world.
Ed Anderson, the Florida Fish & Game and Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge Artist in Residence. Lots of art and historical knowledge about this project.
